ABSTRACT

With the development of posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses implantation and the constant improvement of the implantable collamer lens(ICL), ICL V4c implantation has become one of the main methods for correcting moderate and high myopia. Vault is an important indicator to evaluate the security of posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. In recent years, optimizing surgical procedures to obtain the ideal vault in ICL V4c implantation surgery has become a research hotspot. This paper aims to provide help for improving surgical safety by summarizing and analyzing the optimized programs of ICL V4c implantation surgery. The focus will be on preoperative examination, intraoperative surgical design, and postoperative follow-up.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To propose a three-dimensional (3D) method for evaluating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) changes during Twin-block treatment.@*METHODS@#Seventeen patients with Class II division 1 malocclusion treated using Twin-block and nine untreated patients with a similar malocclusion were included in this research. We collected their cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data from before and 8 months after treatment. Segmentations were constructed using ITK-SNAP. Condylar volume and superficial area were measured using 3D Slicer. The 3D landmarks were identified on CBCT images by using Dolphin software to assess the condylar positional relationship. 3D models of the mandible and glenoid fossa of the patients were constructed and registered via voxel-based superimposition using 3D Slicer. Thereafter, skeletal changes could be visualized using 3DMeshMetric in any direction of the superimposition on a color-coded map. All the superimpositions were measured using the same scale on the distance color-coded map, in which red color represents overgrowth and blue color represents resorption.@*RESULTS@#Significant differences were observed in condylar volume, superficial area, and condylar position in both groups after 8 months. Compared with the control group (CG), the Twin-block group exhibited more obvious condyle-fossa modifications and joint positional changes. Moreover, on the color-coded map, more obvious condyle-fossa modifications could be observed in the posterior and superior directions in the Twin-block group than in the CG.@*CONCLUSIONS@#We successfully established a 3D method for measuring and evaluating TMJ changes caused by Twin-block treatment. The treatment produced a larger condylar size and caused condylar positional changes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Wide-neck aneurysms (WNAs) associated with a dilated parent artery (PA) are not uncommon morphological abnormalities and usually cause inappropriate wall apposition and incomplete neck coverage of a tubular stent in stent-assisted coiling of aneurysms. We aimed to introduce a fusiform-shaped stent (FSS) and test its effectiveness in treating intracranial WNAs associated with a dilated PA using a three-dimensional (3D) model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two FSS types were designed with the middle one-third segment dilated by 10% (FSS10) and 20% (FSS20) and were compared with the tubular-shaped stent (TSS). A patient-specific 3D WNA model was prototyped and produced, and in vitro stent placement was performed. Angiographic images of the three stent types were analyzed and compared using predetermined parameters. RESULTS: The stent lumens were significantly larger in FSS10 and FSS20 than in TSS in the middle segments (P=0.046), particularly FSS20 (P=0.018). The non-covered area at the ostium tended to be smaller in FSS10 and FSS20 than in TSS, but the difference was not significant (P>0.05). The stent length was significantly longer in FSS10 and FSS20 than in TSS. The stent cell size was significantly larger in FSS than in TSS. CONCLUSION: Better vessel wall apposition and aneurysmal neck coverage was observed for FSS than for TSS. No significant difference was observed between FSS10 and FSS20.

ABSTRACT

The research for efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for water splitting are essential for the exploitation and application of hydrogen energy. Transitional metal phosphides are considered as one of the most promising bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts. Herein, we reported a facile two-step method (firstly hydrothermal preparation, then phosphorization under low temperature) to synthesize the bead-chain like nanoarrays of CoP supported on three dimensional Nickel foam (CoP/NF). The as-prepared CoP/NF could act as an efficient bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting. The catalyst exhibited remarkable activity for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media, delivering a current density of 10 mA/cm2at an overpotential of 281 mV for OER and 95 mV for HER, respectively. Efficient water splitting in alkaline system was realized by applying a two-electrode system with the CoP/NF acting as both the anode and cathode. The applied potential was 1.63 V to obtain the current density of 10 mA/cm2,and good stability was also testified.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Onyx has been successfully applied in the treatment of various neurovascular lesions. However, some experience is required to get accustomed to its unpredictable fluoroscopic visibility during injection. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of radiopacity change in a simulated embolization procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a bench-top Onyx injection experiment simulating a typical brain arteriovenous malformation embolization, nine cycles of casting modes (continuous injection) and plugging modes (injection with intermittent pauses) were performed. Radiodensity of Onyx droplets collected from the microcatheter tip and the distal head portion of the microcatheter were measured as time lapsed. Distribution of droplet radiodensity (radiodensity) and distribution of radiographic grade (grade) were analyzed and compared by repeated measurements. RESULTS: Within-group analysis revealed no significant radiodensity change with time (P>0.05). The radiodensity was significantly higher in the casting mode than in the plugging mode (P<0.01). The lateral radiograph of the microcatheter showed higher radiopacity (P<0.01) and better evenness (P<0.01) in the casting mode than in the plugging mode. A significant difference in microcatheter attenuation (both radiographic grade mean and SD; P<0.01) was noted between the two modes. Radiodensity had a significant influence on the radiopacity and radiopacity evenness of the microcatheter. CONCLUSION: The radiopacity of the Onyx can vary significantly over time because of early precipitation of tantalum powder. Radiopacity decreased significantly during plugging modes, characterized by pauses between injections.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of the primary bioactive component diallyltrisulfide (DATS) contained in garlic on the activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) induced by oxidative stress in vitro. METHODS: Rat HSCs were cultured in vitro, and MTT assay was used to screen the effective dose of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for stimulating HSC proliferation. Then lactate dehydrogenase assay was used to examine the toxic effect of DATS on HSCs, and MTT assay to evaluate the anti-proliferative effects of DATS at non-toxic concentrations on HSCs. Flow cytometry was used to determine DATS effects on cell cycle. Hoechst33258 staining and flow cytometry were used to analyze apoptosis. Western blot assays were used to examine the expression of relevant proteins and fibrotic markers. RESULTS: H2O2 at 5 μmol · L significantly promoted HSC proliferation, and this concentration was selected to establish the oxidative stress-induced HSC activation model. MTT assay showed that DATS dose-dependently inhibited HSC proliferation in the presence of H2O2. DATS arrested the H2O2-treated HSC at G2/M check point associated with downregulation of Cyclin B1 and CDK1. DATS also dose-dependently stimulated H2O2-treated HSCs to undergo apoptosis, which was associated with modulation of apoptosis-related molecules including Bax, Bcl-2, Caspase-9 and Caspase-3. Furthermore, DATS was found to reduce the protein abundance of a series of fibrotic marker proteins. CONCLUSION: DATS effectively inhibits oxidative stress-induced HSC activation in vitro demonstrated by suppressed proliferation, arrests cell cycle, increases apoptosis and reduces fibrotic marker expression. These findings provide novel insights into DATS as a potential antifibrotic candidate for further development.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the relationship between arterial stiffness and pre-diabetes when assessed by the new glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) 5.7%-6.4% criterion or by impaired fasting glucose in middle aged Chinese.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>1122 adults aged 55 years or younger in the health examination centers for physical check-ups were enrolled in the two large-sized Tertiary Comprehensive Hospitals in Beijing from June 2011 to June 2012 after excluding those who previously had been diagnosed or treated as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Subjects with a diagnosis of pre-diabetes according to impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels at 5.6-6.9 mmol/L), HbA1c levels at 5.7%-6.4%, or both, were classified into four groups for observation: (1) Normoglycaemia (HbA1c<5.7% and FPG <5.6 mmol/L); (2) IFG alone (FPG levels at 5.6-6.9 mmol/L and HbA1c<5.7% ); (3) HbA1c 5.7%-6.4% alone (HbA1c levels at 5.7%-6.4% and FPG <5.6 mmol/L); and (4) both HbA1c 5.7%-6.4% and IFG (HbA1c levels at 5.7%-6.4% and FPG levels at 5.6-6.9 mmol/L). All subjects were measured for weight, height, waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV).</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The mean values of baPWV were 1282±8, 1311±10, 1398±30, and 1418±27 cm/s (Mean±SE) in Normoglycaemia, HbA1c 5.7%-6.4% alone, IFG alone and the both HbA1c 5.7%-6.4% and IFG groups, respectively. After adjusting for age, gender, blood pressure, BMI and triglyceride, baPWV was significantly higher in subjects with both HbA1c 5.7%-6.4% and IFG compared among the subjects with Normoglycaemia (1350±14 vs. 1301±6 cm/s, P=0.002) and HbA1c 5.7%-6.4% alone (1350±14 vs. 1309±8 cm/s, P=0.013).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Subjects with pre-diabetes exhibited a greater arterial stiffness.</p>

ABSTRACT

<p><b>BACKGROUND</b>It remains controversial what better defines abnormal lung function at the extremes of age. This study aimed to establish new spirometric reference equations for residents in Jinan and compare the most accepted two spirometric definitions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-a fixed post-bronchodilator ratio of forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) below 70% vs. FEV1/FVC < lower limit of normal (LLN)-in an elderly population (age ≥60 years).</p><p><b>METHODS</b>Among 10 002 cases, only never-smokers who had no respiratory symptoms or diagnoses of cardiopulmonary diseases and whose lung function measurements strictly followed the American Thoracic Society guidelines, were included in the statistical analysis. For each gender, prediction equations of FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC and corresponding LLN values were developed using multiple regression models.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>In this cross-sectional study, spirometric reference values were statistically derived from a sample of 1328 healthy never-smokers (672 males, 656 females), age 56-84 years. As expected, age and height were the main predictors for all lung function parameters. Using the two spirometric definitions, the number of pulmonary function test results interpreted as obstructed varied markedly in the elderly population for both genders (males: χ(2) = 19.59, P < 0.01; females: χ(2) = 5.67, P = 0.017).</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) criterion probably leads to overdiagnosis in asymptomatic elderly never-smokers. Our study suggests that the predicted LLN values will reduce the misclassification risk instead. However, cohort studies are urgently needed for clinical validation.</p>

ABSTRACT

Silibinin, from milk thistle (Silybum marianum), is a flavonolignan with anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been therapeutically used for the treatment of hepatic diseases in China, Germany and Japan. Recently, increasing evidences prove that silibinin is also a potent antitumor agent, and the major anti-tumor mechanism for silibinin is the prominent inhibition of the activities of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and their downstream signal molecules in a variety of tumor cell lines, such as epidermal growth factor receptor 1 (EGFR) and insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF-1R) signaling pathways. Meanwhile, the evidences that silibinin selectively scavenges hydroxyl free radical (*OH) and specifically inhibits the action of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-kappaB) provide more complicated explanations for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Some new findings such as that silibinin attenuating the cognitive deficits induced by amyloid beta protein (Abeta) peptide through its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties is valuable to broad the medical prospect of silibinin. In this review, we discuss the molecular pharmacological mechanisms of silibinin, focusing on its inhibition of tyrosine kinases, actions of antioxidation, free radical scavenging, immunoregulation and anti-inflammation.

ABSTRACT

The cDNA of human FGF-21 was subcloned into the pSUMO expression vector and the fusion protein was induced to express in Escherichia coli Rosetta (DE3). The recombinant hFGF-21 was expressed in soluble form in the pSUMO expression system. The recombinant fusion protein was purified by Ni-NTA column. The purified recombinant protein was dialyzed against PBS for re-nature. To obtain pure and active recombinant protein, the fusion protein was subjected to cleavage with SUMO protease I. To examine glucose regulation activity of hFGF-21, 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes were differentiated into adipocytes, glucose up-take activity of hFGF-21 was examined by glucose oxidase and peroxidase (GOD-POD) assay. Compared with no stimulation control, the recombinant hFGF-21 treatment led to a significant increase in glucose consumption of adipocytes and a significant decrease in concentration of glucose in the medium (P < 0.05, P < 0.001).
